The City of La Verne held its General Municipal Election on Tuesday, June 7, and the election results are in. While the vote count has not been finalized, it is anticipated that the following will be officially seated on July 18 and will each serve a four-year term:
- District 1: Steven Frank Johnson
- District 3: Meshal “Kash” Kashifalghita
- District 4: Tim Hepburn
After initiating the district formation process in July 2021, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1106 and Ordinance No. 1107 in December 2021, establishing a by-district electoral system with a rotating Mayor. The June 2022 election was the first election in which residents of La Verne voted for one City Council Member who lives in their district, rather than voting for all City Council Members in a citywide election.
Following the State’s primary election dates, La Verne’s municipal elections are conducted in June during gubernatorial election years and in March during presidential election years. City Council seats for Districts 2 and 5 will be up for election in March 2024.
The Mayor will now be selected by the Council Members on an annual basis. The duties of the Mayor include presiding over the City Council meetings, signing agreements and appointing commissioners and committee members with Council approval.
In accordance with the Los Angeles County Registrar’s process for certifying results, the Official Election Canvass period will conclude on July 5. The elected officials will be seated on the La Verne City Council at the following Council meeting on July 18, and the new City Council will select the Mayor during the meeting.
