Street / Building Maintenance

Street Maintenance

The street maintenance division is responsible for the general maintenance of La Verne’s streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, traffic signs, and signals.  The division performs a variety of routine maintenance of all City streets ranging from street sweeping to graffiti abatement.

Street sweeping

Street sweeping helps to prevent debris and litter from accumulating in our storm drains which is vital to the prevention of storm water pollution.  La Verne’s streets are divided into 5 districts for sweeping purposes.  Each district is swept once every two weeks.  As a result, each street in La Verne is swept twice a month.  For general questions regarding street sweeping contact the Public Works Department at 596-8741.

Graffiti Abatement

The Streets Maintenance Division is committed to the prompt removal of graffiti.  To report graffiti, contact the Graffiti Abatement Hotline at 909-596-8787.

Traffic Lights

To report traffic lights problems or a street maintenance problem contact the Public Works Department at 909-596-8741

Storm Drain Maintenance

What is a storm drain system?

The street maintenance division has the important responsibility of maintaining La Verne’s storm drain system.  The storm drain system is designed to prevent flooding by carrying excess rainwater away from city streets out to the ocean.  The storm drain system consists of curbs and gutters, catch basins (curbside openings), drain pipes, and open flood control channels.  Water flows from your property, along curbside gutters, to a storm drain outlet emptying directly into the ocean.  Unlike the sewer system, the storm drain system does not contain a filter.  As a result, it performs the unintended function of carrying polluted urban runoff into various water bodies.  Urban runoff is a major cause of storm water pollution that leads to beach closures and damage to our nation’s water bodies.  To learn more about storm water pollution click on the environmental protection section (Link to environmental protection section-storm water pollution prevention)

To report illegal dumping into the storm drain contact the Storm Drain Hotline at 1-800-303-0003

To report a clogged catch basin contact the Public Works Department at 596-8741 or the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works at 818-458-4357(HELP).

The Clean Water Act of 1977:

  • Established criteria for the clean up of water
  • Regulated the discharge of pollutants and toxic chemicals
  • Fostered the protection of wildlife
  • Promoted intergovernmental cooperation

In 1987, the act was amended to include provisions regarding the water quality of discharges from storm drain systems.  The amended Clean Water Act of 1987 established requirements for storm water discharges under the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program.

In response to those requirements, the state of California issued a five-year permit for storm water programs that varied from city to city.  Counties and cities are required to develop and carry out programs to enhance the quality of runoff discharging into the storm drain system.  Each county and city storm water quality management plan consists of five elements.  Their objectives are to:

  • Effectively manage and coordinate the implementation of the storm water program
  • Identify and eliminate illicit connections and illicit discharges to the storm drain system
  • Reduce storm water impacts associated with development and redevelopment projects
  • Reduce storm water impacts associated with industrial/commercial activities.
  • Increase public knowledge about the impacts of storm water pollution and actions that can be taken to prevent pollution

For questions regarding the City’s compliance with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and other storm water pollution prevention activities, contact 909-596-8741.
